Underground Cemetery, “Field of Machpelah”
Project type
Public
Concept – A New Burial Approach
An innovative burial concept that integrates open-field interment and “Machpelah-style” multi-level burial, both above and below ground, enabling optimal land-use efficiency. This hybrid model redefines cemetery design by merging tradition with contemporary spatial solutions.
Implementation
The design introduces a sunken terrain for Sanhedrin-style burials, utilizing the site's natural levels to ensure dignified and accessible pathways to each grave unit. A floating roof structure shelters the burial zones and also serves as an additional burial layer, supporting both Sanhedrin and double-depth interment.
Circulation
Primary movement axes form a structured square spiral, organizing the site for clear navigation. Designated gathering spaces support multiple simultaneous funeral ceremonies. The plan includes both horizontal and vertical connections, with multiple entry and exit points—fully accessible for people with disabilities.
Ventilation and Natural Light
The underground levels are naturally lit and ventilated via the continuous perimeter gap created by the floating roof. This architectural void promotes airflow circulation and daylight penetration, ensuring comfort and dignity in the subterranean environment.
